Mozambique decriminalises gay and lesbian relationships

lambda-website-imageMozambique has decriminalized homosexuality in its new penal code, making it one of a few African countries where same-sex relationships are legal.

The revised code drops a colonial-era clause outlawing “vices against nature”. There were no prosecutions under that clause but rights activists have said this change is a symbolic victory.

It comes as other African countries have moved to tighten anti-gay laws. In Nigeria, a law that came into force last year banned same-sex public displays of affection and introduced a possible 14-year prison sentence for gay sex. A study released on Tuesday found that 87% of Nigerians supported a ban on same-sex relations.

In Uganda, the government has pledged to introduce a new restrictive law after the last law which criminalized homosexuality was successfully challenged in the constitutional court. Continue reading

RANTINGS OF A RANDOM (Gay) NIGERIAN (Entry 21)

Blog_Rantings Of A Random (GAY) NigerianHello guys, not that this is necessary, but all the same, I want to clarify that this journal is not a weekly account of my life. Therefore the things I write about every Wednesday are not things that happen between Wednesdays. Some of my entries are weeks apart because I am constrained by space to write everything as they happen.

I had a terrible week, and by the time Friday came around, I was totally exhausted. We had auditors from the regional office around, looking into the books, and everybody was understandably on the edge. My boss kept snapping at everyone as these men pored over every financial detail. And at a point, I secretly wished I could poison their coffee. So I was more than happy when Friday came and I called it a week and headed home to a cool bath, a good book and some coffee. Continue reading

‘The real world is that with the truth comes judgment.’ – Michelle Rodriguez

michelle_rodriguez_on_cara_delevingne_fling_shes_awesomeCara Delevingne recently opened up about her sexuality to Vogue, and (rumored) former flame Michelle Rodriguez couldn’t be happier.

During the press launch for the Fast & Furious-Supercharged ride at Universal Studios, E! News asked the 36-year-old what she thought about the British model’s admission that she’s in love with singer Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent). Her response was awesome.

“Oh, that’s so sexy, you go girl! Work it out! I think that’s hot!” she told E! host Maria Menounos. The “Furious 7” star, who came out as bisexual back in 2013, also noted that it’s not easy to be open and honest about sexual orientation in a judgmental society. Continue reading

The +++ Journals: Entry V

Blog_The +++ Journals 02It has always been easier to play the class clown. I learned much earlier that it was a good defence mechanism; the best way to hide my disappointments, rejection and worries. So it came as no surprise to me when I tried to downplay my new status and brush it off my back.

Upon our return from Daberechi’s lab, Josh and I hung out like we would do on a lazy Saturday: we dined on Josh’s spicy jollof rice he referred to as Mama’s special, watched reruns of our favourite shows and went out for a meet-n-drink with a couple of friends when the sun set.

There was cold beer and up-tempo music, with, of course, Yours Truly playing the role of the king’s jester and endeavouring to make everyone laugh. I think it was and still is a good distraction – focusing on everyone else and living in the moment. Besides, if I decided to stay at home and stew, it would not change my circumstance. After one too many bottles, I went home feeling optimistic about life and the road ahead. Continue reading

The Perfect Response Arnold Schwarzenegger Gave A Homophobic Troll

As a result of the Supreme Court ruling, which nicely coincided with Pride parades across the globe, all of social media quickly turned into a flurry of rainbows, with Facebook even creating a seriously nifty app that layered a rainbow flag over your profile picture to showcase your support.

It was pretty cool.

Anyways, obviously a whole load of celebrities publicly celebrated the ruling. And then, when veteran actor, action man, and former Californian mayor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, got involved, things took a turn for the amazing. Continue reading

LOVE AND SEX IN THE CITY (Episode 39)

Blog_Love And Sex In The City 02“Um, Yinka, you didn’t tell me you are now running a bed-and-breakfast in your house,” Biola called out as he made his way with affected genteelness to a sofa, into which he lowered himself before looking up.

“Don’t look at me,” I said, as I walked across the room from the inner part of the house to find a seat. I had my shoes in my hand and wanted to set about polishing them. “I only just spent the night here, because Yinka said he couldn’t come pick me up at my house this morning.”

There was some traffic in the small parlour as Adebola, Eddie and Ekene filed past Paschal – who’d opened the door – into the room. They were all well-dressed, and the collective bouquet of their perfumery circumfused and hung richly in the air, a steady reminder that we all had somewhere to be this morning. Continue reading
