My Prayer For Us All

First, a fellow kitodiariesian mentioned it in one of his comments, about a friend of his who was murdered in a hook-up gone wrong. Then a friend sent me the link to where it was reported online. He’d been abducted, ransomed and later killed. A young, good-looking, promising gay man with his whole life ahead of him – that life now suddenly, brutally cut short.

And his crime was simply that he lusted after who this country thinks he shouldn’t desire.

I didn’t want to say anything on KD about this. I rejected outrightly the notion of even updating a post on the murder. But as I contemplated it, I felt a deep grief in my heart. I don’t even know the deceased, but I can imagine the horror, the despair he must have felt in the final moments of his life. And my imagination of it, my relation to his pain, brought tears to my eyes.

And it made me say a prayer, one I’d like to now share with y’all.twee1twee2twee3twee4May John Chinedu Okere rest in peace.

May his killers be brought to justice…or be visited by the vengeful hand of Karma.

And may God deliver us, the living ones, from evil.

  1. so so sad
its true that the hate is so much….hate we dont deserve. One jst has to be very careful in naija.
If things r gonna change we all have to be proactive. Dont let ur kids suffer d same fate. We may not b able to do much now but we can change the future

  2. Oooh!!! Am so feeling you my dear!!! That part about his last minutes on earth touched a side of me that made me choke!!! But let’s bless them oooo that curse so that they fall into the hand of God and boi when he gets a hold of them!!! U can bet!!

  3. very tragic. I think at the end of the day we should all be careful, and cautious. I never really met him or knew him but I recognised his face the moment I saw it up on blogs because he had his face up on his profile on a gay dating site, it also contained links to his instagram account, something I had always frowned upon. I am convinced that it is through the same site he met his demise. Let’s exercise a little caution pls, they are desperate frustrated people out there. lets all be vigilant

  4. I love my job, I love my friends and the life that I have built here for myself. But everyday Nigeria makes me flirt with the idea of packing up and leaving forever! When you have to constantly look over your shoulder? Check and double check + triple check before meeting someone for coffee? This is crazy!

I did not know you personally, but we had a few mutual friends. Fare thee well!!!

    • Bro, I can totally relate with the paranoia. You keep looking behind your back as if you are some criminal in town who recently escaped from a prison.
I too feel like abandoning this country for good.

  5. The bible says the heart of man is desperately wicked !!! But I say that of a average homophobic nigerian is much worse!!! Its a pity though ! Pray the soul of the departed rests in peace amen!!!

  6. I still believe that 90% of set ups, violence against gays etc are done by fellow gays for criminally economic reasons and sheer way to dislodge blackmailer is not to co-operate while being conversant with our laws and the psychology of law enforcement agents. May the soul of this young man find favor with God.what a loss! ! !

  7. Oh no. I couldn’t believe when my buddy told me. We never chatted but followed each other on IG & liked each other’s pics. Its all so depressing….I went to his twitter handle & saw a dude I’m suspecting could be a suspect but *sigh* damn. Why are people so inhuman? And in the name of a fantasy sky deity

  8. Jeeeeeeessuuuzzz, we used to be good friends, and I’ve been to his house before. I was like a mentor to him. Never knew he is gone. Omg this is crazy * sweating profusely and hyperventilating *

  9. “My sexuality is an offence to nobody but perhaps you, God. And since you’ve not struck me down, pls shield me from the evil of my fellow man “.

And to that I say AMEN.

May John Okere’s soul rest in peace.

  10. Well, I have read the news online over and over again from different sources and there’s nothing to say that he was suspected to be gay or not so I don’t really know if we are right to say that he was killed for being gay. That being said, I know nedunaija as he will fondly be remembered by on twitter and he’s a jolly good fellow. May God rest his soul in perfect peace. To all you my sisters out there, may God protect and guide us **Cheers**
